Guilio Marcolongo started turning in 1995 after deciding he needed an outlet for his energy other than work. The idea was also so he could spend more time with his wife, Sue, by getting her involved in helping him sell his wares at craft markets.

Guilio MarcolongoIt seems that the level of enthusiasm totally skipped the craft market idea as his creative journey moved on.

Otematata Experience was surely a real eye-opener and wonderful experience for Guilio, and maybe a major step in his woodturning career. Taking the idea of the Otematata event to have “a gathering of turners to share their knowledge come pro or just plain joe off the street are all equal”.

Back to Australia the Down Under Turn Around gathering of woodturners at Phillip Island, Victoria, was born and is now an annual event. The next year, now three years since he purchased his lathe, he was invited to demonstrate at the Utah Symposium.  He has now been to America many times, to England, and frequently returned to New Zealand.  He does all the Working With Wood shows in Australia.  A truly accomplished and entertaining
demonstrator up amongst the best in the world. In amongst all this Guilio was entering his work in exhibitions. Winning prizes in the Orbost Australian Wood Design Exhibition and Go with the Grain Exhibition, Warburton, Victoria. Guilio enjoys travelling, teaching, and passing on his skills to others. He especially likes making lidded boxes which have his own flair, turning that hard Australian burl into beautiful pieces, and making the occasional hat.

Session 2: SECRET SPHERE BOX

The project involves turning a sphere but it will be a box. After I turn the box I will jam chuck it and put multiple grooves around the sphere so as to hide the joint.

Session 1: DUAL EMERGING BOX

The piece will be 2 boxes in one .  The process involves glueing 2 pieces of wood together one sacrificial the other a quality choice piece .

I will show how to turn 2 hemispheres on both ends of a square piece of wood

when the hemispheres are turned I will part the sacrificial from the main wood.  I will jam chuck one at a time and turn out the hemispheres to create the bottom of the dual box from here I will show how to turn 2 lids to fit. This demo involves accurate measuring,  jam chucking and hot melt glue.
